This beautiful island destination in southern Thailand captured my heart from the moment I arrived. With its stunning limestone cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and lush jungle landscapes, Krabi offers a bit of everything for every kind of traveler. Whether you’re after relaxation, adventure, or cultural immersion, Krabi delivers in spades.
Languages Spoken
While the official language of Thailand is Thai, you’ll find that many locals in Krabi speak at least some English, especially in tourist areas like Ao Nang, Railay Beach, and Krabi Town. I always recommend learning a few basic phrases in Thai—it goes a long way in making a good impression with locals! Simple words like “Sawasdee” (hello) and “Khop Khun” (thank you) are appreciated.
Currency
Thailand’s currency is the Thai Baht (THB). At the time I visited, 1 USD was around 30-33 baht, though rates fluctuate. There are plenty of ATMs in tourist-heavy spots like Ao Nang and Railay Beach, but it’s wise to carry some cash with you, especially in more remote areas where card payments aren’t always accepted.
How to Get to Krabi
By Air: Krabi International Airport (KBV) is the main gateway to the region and is serviced by both domestic and international flights. I flew directly from Bangkok, but there are flights from other major cities in Thailand as well as international routes from places like Singapore and Malaysia.
From the airport, it’s about a 30-40 minute drive to popular areas like Ao Nang or Railay Beach. You can easily grab a taxi, shuttle, or private transfer.
By Bus or Train: If you’re traveling from Bangkok on a budget, buses and trains are also an option. You can catch an overnight bus or a train to Surat Thani and then transfer to Krabi by bus. While this option is cheaper, it takes much longer—usually 12-15 hours.
By Boat: If you’re already in nearby islands like Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, or Koh Lanta, you can take a ferry to Krabi. The boat ride offers spectacular views of the surrounding islands and is a relaxing way to arrive.

Top Attractions in Krabi
- Railay Beach Railay Beach is hands-down one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. Accessible only by boat, this secluded paradise is framed by dramatic limestone cliffs that are a favorite among rock climbers. Whether you’re into climbing, swimming, or simply lounging on the beach with a fresh coconut in hand, Railay Beach offers a perfect escape.
- Phi Phi Islands A quick boat ride from Krabi, the Phi Phi Islands are a must-visit. The emerald waters, stunning coral reefs, and vibrant marine life make this an incredible spot for snorkeling and diving.

The emerald waters are as inviting as they sound, and a soak in the nearby hot springs is the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.
Marketplaces in Krabi
For a taste of local life, make sure to visit one of Krabi’s vibrant markets. I absolutely loved strolling through these bustling markets, sampling street food, and picking up unique souvenirs.
- Krabi Town Walking Street Market
Held every weekend, this market is a feast for the senses. You’ll find local food stalls selling everything from grilled seafood to delicious mango sticky rice. There are also vendors selling handicrafts, clothing, and artwork—perfect for those looking to bring home a special memento from Krabi. - Ao Nang Night Market
This market is smaller than the one in Krabi Town but still worth a visit. It’s open every evening and is a great place to grab some dinner after a day of exploring. The freshly made fruit smoothies were a personal favorite of mine! - Maharaj Market
For an authentic local experience, head to Maharaj Market in Krabi Town. It’s a daytime market where locals buy their fresh produce, seafood, and spices. Even if you’re not shopping for groceries, it’s a fascinating place to wander and observe the hustle and bustle of everyday life in Krabi.
Bike Hire in Krabi
Exploring Krabi by bike is a fantastic way to get around at your own pace. Bike rental shops are abundant in Ao Nang, Krabi Town, and even on Railay Beach.
- Prices: Expect to pay about 150-250 THB per day for a motorbike, and helmets are usually included. If you’re more into cycling, you can rent a pushbike for around 50-100 THB per day.
- Where to hire: Look for rental shops along the main tourist streets in Ao Nang and Krabi Town. Always check the bike for any pre-existing damage before setting off, and make sure you have a valid driver’s license if you plan on renting a motorbike.
I found riding around on a motorbike to be incredibly freeing—it’s the best way to discover hidden beaches and quiet spots away from the tourist crowds.
Scams to Watch Out For
Krabi is generally a safe place, but like any tourist destination, it has its share of scams. Here are a few to be mindful of:
- Taxi and Tuk-Tuk Overcharging Always agree on a fare before getting into a taxi or tuk-tuk. Some drivers might take advantage of tourists by quoting an inflated price at the end of the ride. I found using the Grab app (similar to Uber) to be a reliable way to get around without any surprises.
- Boat Tour Scams When booking island tours, especially to places like the Phi Phi Islands, make sure you’re dealing with a reputable company. Some less-than-honest operators might cut corners, resulting in overcrowded boats or shortened itineraries. Check reviews online or book through your hotel for peace of mind.
- Jet Ski Scams While renting a jet ski can be a fun way to explore the waters around Krabi, be wary of hidden damage fees. Some operators claim you’ve damaged the jet ski and charge you a hefty fee for repairs. Always inspect the equipment thoroughly before renting, and take photos of any pre-existing damage.
Krabi is more than just a beach destination—it’s an experience. The people, the culture, and the breathtaking natural beauty make it a place you won’t forget. If you’re planning a trip to Thailand, make sure Krabi is on your itinerary!
